President's Convocation

Evoking the pageantry and spectacle stemming from the earliest days of the academy in Western Civilization, this formal ceremony marks the beginning of the College’s 191st academic year. President’s Convocation offers faculty, staff, and upper-year students the occasion to welcome new scholars into the community formally and to surround them with Trinity’s history.

Faculty members in full regalia and first-year students will gather at the Fuller Arch at Northam Tower as music from Trinity’s famous 49-bell carillon beckons all on campus. Fanfares from the Quiet City Brass Quintet and Tympani will accompany the faculty and student procession to the Main Quadrangle.

During the Convocation ceremony, parents, faculty, student leaders, and members of the administrative staff will be seated on all four sides of the first-year class, forming a symbolic matrix of support as the class begins its years at Trinity. The highlight of this memorable occasion is Trinity College President Joanne Berger-Sweeney’s Convocation address, her most important to students each year. The ceremony concludes with the declaration of the opening of the College’s 191st academic year by Dean of the Faculty Thomas Mitzel.

The Chapel Singers group is Trinity’s oldest student organization, founded in 1824. The group strives to maintain a high standard of choral excellence as benefits our landmark Chapel. The Chapel Singers provide music for Sunday Chapel at 5:15 p.m. on most Sundays throughout the term, and on other occasions, including the annual Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols, Matriculation, Baccalaureate, and other concerts. On occasion, the Chapel Singers perform off-campus, at home, and abroad. Previous tours have included concerts in England, Argentina, Italy, San Francisco, and the United States Virgin Islands. Chapel Singers receive a stipend for their services. Weekly schedule: Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00-6:00 p.m. and most Sundays throughout the term, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Nothing specific needs to be prepared for auditions; however, some previous choral experience is a prerequisite.
